Rocky Mount, Va. (September 4, 2024) – The YMCA is proud to announce a series of new and exciting programs aimed at promoting physical activity among children. In a time when screen time and sedentary lifestyles are becoming increasingly common, the importance of keeping children physically active cannot be overstated. The YMCA’s youth programs provide the perfect opportunity for children to develop healthy habits, build social skills, and have fun while staying active.

“Regular physical activity is essential for children’s overall health and wellbeing,” Says Mark Angel, Fitness Director. “It helps improve cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles and bones, and boost mental health by reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Additionally, active children are more likely to develop lifelong healthy habits and maintain a healthy weight, reducing their risk of chronic diseases in the future.”

The YMCA is committed to providing a variety of programs that encourage children to get moving while learning new skills and making friends. Here are some of the exciting opportunities available:

  • Riptide Swim Team (Ages 4-19): Starting this September, the Riptide Swim Team offers a range of options from developmental practice groups to elite competitive teams. Our skilled coaches create a supportive and motivating environment, ensuring every child feels confident and enthusiastic about swimming.
  • Homeschool PE (Ages 6-12): Designed to keep homeschoolers active and social, this program offers a range of physical activities that promote fitness and teamwork. Classes begin on September 10th and will be held every Tuesday from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM.
  • Tiny Tumblers Gymnastics (Ages 3-6): This program helps young children develop strength, coordination, and confidence through fun gymnastics activities. Tiny Tumblers starts on September 10th, with classes every Tuesday from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM.
  • Soccer Clinic (Ages 3-6): Led by Coach Ben, a seasoned assistant soccer coach with the Franklin County Recreation Department, this clinic is designed to introduce young children to the basics of soccer. Starting on September 12th, this clinic will run every Thursday from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Participants will engage in fun activities like footwork exercises, kicking, and dribbling drills, all while learning the rules of the game.

The YMCA believes in making these programs accessible to all families. Pricing for each program is affordable, with discounts available for multiple children and YMCA members. The Soccer Clinic, for example, is priced at $40 per month for members and $45 per month for potential members.

Spaces are limited, so parents are encouraged to enroll their children as soon as possible. For more information about these programs and to register, please call (540) 489-9622. Let’s work together to keep our kids healthy, happy, and active!
