Franklin County, Va. (May 5, 2026) – The Franklin County Family YMCA is proud to recognize May as National Water Safety Month, reinforcing its commitment to keeping children and families safe around water as the summer season approaches.
Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death for children, but it is preventable. Through swim lessons, water safety education, and certified lifeguard training, the YMCA is working to ensure that everyone in our community has access to lifesaving skills.
As part of this effort, the YMCA is offering a variety of swim lesson options for all ages and skill levels. Programs include youth swim lessons for ages 3–10, as well as a special Parent & Child class for children ages 6 months to 3 years, designed to introduce water comfort, basic safety skills, and bonding experiences between caregivers and their little ones. These early experiences help build confidence and lay the foundation for lifelong water safety.
In addition to swim instruction, the YMCA is also offering lifeguard certification courses throughout the spring, with multiple session dates available through the end of May. These courses provide hands-on training in rescue techniques, CPR, and emergency response, preparing participants with the critical skills needed to keep others safe in and around the water. Recertification courses are also available for currently certified lifeguards looking to renew their credentials.
“Our goal is to build confidence, teach essential safety skills, and create a culture of awareness around water,” said Kameron Kitts, Aquatics Director. “From our youngest swimmers to those training to become lifeguards, we are committed to equipping our community with the knowledge and skills that can truly save lives.”
Throughout the month of May, the YMCA will be sharing water safety tips, promoting swim lesson enrollment, and encouraging families to take an active role in water safety.
Community members are invited to learn more about available programs, including upcoming swim lesson sessions and lifeguard training opportunities, by visiting www.franklincountyymca.org or stopping by the YMCA.
