Rocky Mount, Va. (May 8, 2024) – As the summer season approaches, the Y is proud to announce its participation in Water Safety Month, a vital initiative aimed at educating Franklin County about water safety practices. With a rich legacy of promoting health and wellbeing, the Y reaffirms its commitment to fostering safe aquatic environments for individuals of all ages and abilities.

Water Safety Month, observed annually throughout May, serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of water safety education. As families prepare for summer activities by the pool, beach, or lakeside, the YMCA remains dedicated to equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to enjoy water activities responsibly.

“At the Y, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to engage in aquatic activities safely,” said Kameron Kitts Aquatics Director at the Rocky Mount Y. “Water Safety Month provides us with a platform to reinforce essential water safety practices and empower individuals with the confidence to enjoy the water while minimizing risks.”

Throughout the month of May, the Y will offer a variety of water safety programs and initiatives, including swim lessons, CPR and first aid training, and lifeguard certification courses. These activities are designed to cater to diverse age groups and skill levels, ensuring that everyone has access to the resources needed to stay safe in and around water.

As part of its ongoing commitment to water safety, the Y encourages families and individuals to take proactive steps to prevent drowning incidents. Simple measures such as learning to swim, wearing life jackets, supervising children around water, and knowing how to respond in emergency situations can make a significant difference in preventing tragedies.

“Water safety is not just a priority for us; it’s a shared responsibility that requires collective action,” emphasized Kitts. “By working together and prioritizing education and prevention, we can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the water safely.”
