Smith Mountain Lake, Va. (April 22, 2025) – The Smith Mountain Lake YMCA is excited to announce the construction of brand-new outdoor pickleball courts, set to open in Fall 2025. This exciting addition will provide the community with a premier space to enjoy one of the nation’s fastest-growing sports while promoting health, fitness, and social connection.
Pickleball, a fun and accessible sport for all ages, has seen a surge in popularity, and the YMCA is thrilled to meet this demand with state-of-the-art courts designed for both recreational and competitive play. The courts will be available for open play, leagues, lessons, and special events, ensuring that everyone—from beginners to seasoned players—has a place to enjoy the game.
“The YMCA has always been a place where people come together to play, learn, and grow,” said Andrea Fansler, Branch Director. “These new pickleball courts will not only encourage active lifestyles but also strengthen our community by providing a welcoming space for all generations to connect and enjoy the sport together.”
The new YMCA Pickleball Complex will feature five state-of-the-art outdoor pickleball courts, designed to accommodate players of all skill levels. The courts will be built with high-quality, durable surfaces, offering an excellent playing experience for recreational and competitive play alike.
In addition to the courts, the project will include a spacious viewing platform, providing a comfortable space for spectators to watch games, socialize, and cheer on players. This elevated area will enhance the community experience, making the facility a welcoming destination for both athletes and supporters.
To ensure easy access, a dedicated parking area will be added, offering convenient and safe parking for players, families, and visitors. The entire complex is designed to foster a welcoming and engaging environment, where people of all ages can come together to enjoy the sport, stay active, and build community connections.
“I’ve seen firsthand how much our community loves pickleball, but right now, we just don’t have enough space for everyone who wants to play. These new courts would make a huge difference—not just for the regular players, but for newcomers, families, and anyone looking for a fun way to stay active. This project is something we really need, and I’m excited to see it come to life,” said Bill Cooper, YMCA Board Member and Head of the Pickleball For All Committee.
The Pickleball For All campaign has been made possible through the generosity of donors and community sponsors. Fundraising efforts are still underway, and there are exciting donor recognition opportunities available, including court sponsorships and naming rights.
